Selangor Tops Life Expectancy Charts, Terengganu Trails Behind
In a recent report, the Department of Statistics has revealed some interesting insights into life expectancy in Malaysia. According to the publication titled “Abridged Life Tables, Malaysia 2021-2023,” Selangorians can look forward to the longest life expectancy at birth, with Terengganu lagging behind at the other end of the spectrum.
Selangor Shines Bright
Chief Statistician Uzir Mahidin shared that Selangor emerged as the leader in life expectancy at birth for both males and females. With an impressive 80.5 years, Selangor outshone all other states in Malaysia, setting the bar high.

Apart from Selangor, four other states surpassed the national life expectancy levels for the years 2021 to 2023. These states are Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Labuan, and Sarawak. It’s worth noting that these areas are known for their diverse populations and robust healthcare systems, contributing to their higher life expectancies.

District-Level Insights
For the first time, the report provides life expectancy data at the district level, offering a more granular view of the nation’s health. In 2023, Petaling in Selangor emerged as the district with the highest life expectancy at birth, clocking in at 80.5 years. Meanwhile, Samarahan in Sarawak held this distinction in 2022 with 79.6 years, and in 2021, it was Samarahan again with 79.8 years.
Variations Across Districts
The report also highlighted disparities in life expectancy among different districts. Kecil Lojing in Kelantan had the lowest life expectancy at birth in 2023, standing at just 62.8 years. This stark contrast illustrates how various factors, including healthcare access, lifestyle, and socioeconomic conditions, can significantly impact life expectancy.
Trends Over the Years
Analyzing trends, the report revealed that from 2013 to 2019, life expectancy at birth increased by 0.3 years, with males gaining 0.2 years and females 0.5 years. However, from 2020 to 2022, there was a noticeable decrease of 0.9 years in life expectancy, with males experiencing a one-year drop and females 0.8 years. Encouragingly, in 2023, life expectancy bounced back, recording an increase of one year compared to the previous year. This resurgence was attributed to changes in the number of excess deaths during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ethnicity and Life Expectancy
The report also delved into the relationship between ethnicity and life expectancy. Chinese individuals continued to register the highest life expectancy at birth in 2023, with an average of 77 years. In contrast, the lowest life expectancy at birth was observed among Indians, with an average of 71.4 years for the same year.
These insights shed light on the complex interplay of factors that influence life expectancy in Malaysia. They also underscore the importance of healthcare accessibility, lifestyle choices, and social determinants in shaping the length and quality of our lives. As the nation continues to navigate health challenges, these findings serve as valuable markers for policymakers and healthcare providers in their quest to improve the well-being of all Malaysians.
